My Students

My classroom is like my students' home-away-from-home. It is a place where I am fostering a love of learning with a sense of independence. My classroom is set-up to be a place where my students can learn and feel as though they are somewhere safe.

Our school is the poorest and one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S.

School is typically the only safe haven these kids know. My students live in a city where the dynamics can change in the blink of an eye. Even though my students live in a city that has its ups and downs, they are always eager to come to school to learn and experience new and exciting things. The students in my class are all classified as "Autistic" and as one student said, "We are all autistic in our own ways." All the students in my building look out for my students and they will give them "high-5s" when they see them. I want to be able to provide my students with every experience that they will need to be successful in this world.

My Project

We are requesting various sensory items that will assist in helping my students to calm down and to deescalated their sensory overloads that they all experience. These items, including YoYa toys, mats, metal pin art, fidget spinners and more, will be placed in our sensory room for students to use at any time that they feel that they need to relax and to calm down.

The use of a lava lamp will help my students to redirect their focus and attention from what is bothering them to something of great enjoyment and relaxation.

By helping my students to learn how to relax, it will help them to be able to handle being integrated into the regular education setting in our school.
