My Students

My students have an enthusiasm for learning. They are budding scientists and are always engaged when it comes to our science activities and learning new concepts. "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm." -Ralph Waldo Emerson We use real activities to spark interest and curiosity.

Our K-5 students are from diverse cultural backgrounds.

They are inner city children who love to learn and explore. Due to space and location constraints, we are limited in terms of where and how we can learn about living things and how they grow. Being from the city, they are not exposed to gardening, although to them it is magic when they see how seeds germinate!

My Project

Students will learn about composting and how organic matter can be broken down to provide nutrients for the soil and the plants that use it. It is natures way of recycling! We also will research plants that can be grown in our area within the school year. We will use our Growlab to help the seeds germinate and develop into healthy plants that can be transplanted into pots. We hope one day have a garden where we can help our students grow their own food. This will hopefully entice students to incorporate healthier choices in their diets while teaching them how they can do this at home.

This project will make a difference in the lives of our students and their families.

Some of our students have never been exposed to eating certain healthy foods. Processed food costs much less than organic produce. Produce has become so expensive that many families have to limit their food choices according to what they can afford. Teaching students that they can care for their environment (compost) while growing their own food is a valuable life long lesson.
