My Students

I am a first year teacher in a 6:1:1 classroom of 3rd and 4th grade students diagnosed with Autism. My class is part of a bigger program which currently has multiple 6:1:1 classrooms as well as 12:1:1 classroom environments with special needs children.

Our students are primarily visual, auditory, and tactile learners which requires an array of supplies to enrich classroom and school activities.

This spring and summer, myself and Mrs Koser would like to organize a school garden for our students to enjoy. The students will experience various hands on activities and tasks that involve growing and caring for a garden. The garden will provide our students with a fun and engaging way to learn almost any subject – from science, math, and art. It will help teach the students life lessons through direct experiences and kinesthetic participation with their peers. It will expose students to social situations in a natural environment, developing social skills such as turn taking. The garden will help develop gross and fine motor skills needed to care for a garden which can be applied across all natural environments.

With your generous donation, our students will have their own garden to care for and enjoy!

My Project

The garden will help teach the students life lessons through direct experiences and kinesthetic participation with their peers. It will expose students to social situations in a natural environment developing social skills such as turn taking. The garden will help develop gross and fine motor skills needed to care for a garden which can be applied across all natural environments.

As you can see from the picture, our current garden is not in good shape.

The whole thing will have to be removed and redone which is why your donations mean so much to our school!

The raised planting bed will replace the current planters that are old and broken beyond repair. The neem oil will help keep our flowers and vegetables free of parasites. The fertilizer will help nourish our plants so the students can watch them grow to their fullest potential. The pebbles will be used around the garden to help control weed growth. The soil will be used to fill up our new planters.
