This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I began teaching at my high school (99% Hispanic, 92% free/reduced lunch) in January 2015. The budget at school is very limited, and I am not even able to get a simple set of scientific calculators for my students. There are some topics in Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 that need calculators.

My students come from modest, hard working families that cannot afford many luxuries and count on the school to provide the necessary math tools to be successful in the classroom.

These students are great kids, but sometimes are hard to motivate. If we cannot provide them the basics they need, it makes it that much harder to motivate them.

My Project

The students will use this basic necessity to work on the challenging common core standards that have recently been adopted. At the moment I have to borrow a set of calculators from another teacher on campus all the way across campus. There are times that we cannot get them because he needs them for his class. The students are then forced to use the 4 calculators that I brought from home (40 students sharing 4 calculators, not very efficient).

These kids would greatly appreciate having this very vital resource in our classroom, and would be able to not have to worry about this basic necessity and move on to the higher level thinking they need to be focusing on.
