My Students

"People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by just one book!" - Malcolm X. My students' first assignment this year and on display underneath this quote in the classroom are interviews of family members and personal role models about their favorite books and the impact they made.

My scholars are 8th grade boys attending public school.

They are critical thinkers with great questions and strong opinions. They are growing up in a very complicated, fast-paced world. They come to school nearly every day of the year and stay for extended day programming. They are extremely loyal to one another and to their teachers. As their educators, we set out to develop and encourage in them resilience, confidence, effort, leadership and commitment to excellence. We are a Title 9 school in a low-performing district in NYC. Many of our scholars read below grade level and have low confidence in their reading and writing skills. However, they demonstrate a depth of curiosity and critical thinking that is undervalued in our society. We make tremendous effort to select high quality texts and design rich curriculum that celebrate the cultural riches and heritage of our scholars' communities. We want our scholars to see themselves reflected in that legacy.

My Project

When you find a great book, it means everything to a student! All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely is that book. We have been reading photocopied materials, as our end of year budget will not afford a class set of new hardcover books. Our scholars are eager to read a new chapter everyday. We have designed a curriculum for scholars to engage with current events, supplementary nonfiction texts, poetry, film studies, and media literacy as they master the ELA skills necessary to enter high school. A real book in hand is a powerful experience for a typically reluctant reader who is engaged with the text. We want our scholars to be familiar with the practice of book reading everyday and we also plan to use these books for our 8th graders next year. Building confidence in reluctant readers is absolutely essential for skills acquisition. Engagement and enjoyment of the reading experience is essential for learning.

Experiencing a love for reading is a transformative process for a young person.

Many of us aren't fully cognizant of how powerful and this experience is because it happened to us on many occasions when we were adolescents. Unfortunately, for many young people today, this is not the case. I have had scholars approach me and say, "This was the first book I couldn't stop reading," or "I can't remember the last time I enjoyed." We know that this book will have a powerful impact on our scholars.
