Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

This year, we started our school's first Robotics Team and it has been a huge hit. Kids are excited, work hard with complex ideas and are able to apply that learning in new ways. Our kids are creative and eager, but we need the materials for them to be able to build and items like this just aren't in our budget.

This year, our students went to qualifiers for the First Tech Challenge (FTC) and we want to return next year. We'll need to modify our design to remain competitive - and for that, we need materials!

Teamwork is built into the FTC program and our students have learned so much from each other and from the whole process has been just amazing to see. This is advanced design work and my students started the year without any experience building robots or coding in Java. Months later, they have gotten to competitions, have a working robot and have successfully coded.

All of this was done with incredible teamwork and a beautiful collaborative sense of problem solving. Although I loved to see how the robot performed in the competition, I have been proudest just watching them solve the problems this presents as a team.

In Their Own Words

We want to redesign our robot and for the other parts of the competition, we really need more parts. Right now, our robot is basic, but it does a great job, but there are a lot of different part of the competitions and our robot just can't do those parts until we get some pieces for it.

We work together in everything we do and there is a lot of respect all around. One of the things that we like most about FTC is the Gracious Professionalism. Everyone wants to help and wants to keep you learning. There's no one you can't ask to try and solve a problem.

This is hard, but so satisfying. It's great to reach out and work with other teams - and I guess that's a socio-emotional skill, right?

I love this and it's gotten me really excited to come to school. We've never had a robots program before - and I didn't even know that our school had a robot! It's important because it makes sense of all of those sensors and gears and coding. When you can get it all together, everything about it starts making so much sense to me.
