My Students

Do you remember being enraptured in a good book? Not wanting to put it down? My students are trying to experience that same feeling with the books they are reading independently in our classroom.

My students represent a variety of reading levels, however over 2/3 of them are 1-3 grade levels behind in their reading level.

Their reading level affects their ability to do well on state standardized tests, their comprehension in other core classes (Language Arts, Science, etc.), and and their overall access to information. The majority of my students associate the word "boring" with reading because they have not had access to books that pique their interest or to which they can relate. My students are incredibly curious about the world around them and love learning, however the stigma they associate with reading has prevented them from applying this curiosity to literature.

My Project

My students need high-interest books to create a classroom library filled with books they want to read and are excited about. These books are mostly young adult/teen fiction that have been written recently and deal with issues my students come into contact with everyday. These books will be integrated into the independent reading my students do on a daily basis at the beginning of class. This activity activates their minds, gets them excited about reading before class has even begun, and has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to enhance a person's reading ability. Students will be able to practice higher-level reading skills we learn in class with these high-interest books, such as inferring meaning, identifying theme, and making connection between literature and one's world. These books will allow my students to connect what they learn in class to material that they have chosen and are more invested in reading.

By reading a book that they enjoy, students will begin to understand that reading can become integrated into their lives and can be an extremely enjoyable activity.

Both these ideas are necessary in order to turn reluctant students into lifelong readers.
