My Students

This year I have a fabulous group of 24 fourth grade students. They are creative and kind, smart and curious. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and have different abilities as students. One thing that my students all have in common though is their love for stories. The best part of our day is when I read aloud to them.

There are many strengths that my students have.

I mentioned that they are creative and curious. We enjoy writing working on projects to find solutions to games and puzzles and learning about new things in class. I also told you that my students are kind. I have a wide range of student abilities in my classroom and yet none of the students feel that they don’t belong. We have discussions in our morning meeting each day to learn about things like mindfulness, empathy, and persistence. We are learning how all these things look and why they are an important part of life. Of course, all children are smart. My class is no exception. I have 24 experts on a wide variety of subjects. We love to learn from each other and share things that we know.

My Project

As a teacher of fourth grade students, you sometimes wonder what are the most important things you are really teaching? There are so many lessons that we teach at a desk that is really an add-on from third grade that will be a beginning to what they learn in fifth. Facts and algorithms, rules and standards are the things we focus on the most. Science could be like that too. There are many lessons to be learned from a book, but science was meant to really get your hands dirty right? So, my project idea is to really get our hands dirty.

One of the fourth grade science seed standards is to be able to explain-from evidence-that plants have external and internal structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.

I can’t even think of a better way to do that in a classroom than to actually start a garden in there! I have wanted to do a classroom garden for many years and this opportunity has really spurred on some great projects in my head. I have always wanted to experiment with hydroponics as well as soil use when starting plants. I think it will be a fun project that we can do year-round.
