Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working with low-income/high poverty kids has its challenges. Many times, I feel that they need me to be more than just their teacher. Whether I'm providing them tangible supplies or reassurance that whatever ails them will be ok, I have become more than their teacher. About 90% of my class are African American children from "the projects". The rest are immigrant Chinese and Pakistani children. My job is made 10x harder because these kids are already at a disadvantage.

Although I am the teacher, they themselves, have taught me many life lessons.

This is what makes them special. They are savvy in ways that other children aren't. Please help me give them a fair chance at success!

My Project

The best learning happens at the meeting area in our classroom. My students are more focused when in front of me as a group. They can turn to each other and discuss/participate in the lesson while on the floor.

We are lacking a mat right now.

I think that a mat at the meeting area would make them even more excited to come to this learning place. I also think they would feel more comfortable on a soft mat as opposed to a cold floor. I'd love to tell them that strangers donated a mat because they want them to feel comfortable in their classroom and succeed in school.
