Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a suburban, Title I, bilingual elementary school of about 550 students K-5. Our students primarily live in apartments and with about 70% on the free and reduced meal program, most do not have a lot at home. This is why our teachers and administrators strive to provide more than just the basics.

As a Leader in Me school, we strive to recognize the different leadership abilities in all students.

Teachers and leaders strive to not only provide solid academic foundations and meet the needs of all learners, but also give students opportunities to learn in a collaborative environment.

Each Friday, we offer "clubs" to provide students with opportunities that other students might get in extra-curricular activities. We want students to leave our schools as true leaders and that is why we promote the Leader in Me and the Engaged Learning Model.

My Project

Our Title I school believes in strong academics, but also wants to provide our students with opportunities that they will not otherwise have. In this effort, our school has a small but popular MakerSpace. We also have Friday clubs that help students explore new and different extra-curricular interests, including coding. The materials in this project will be used in our MakerSpace and by our clubs. Students' eyes light up when they see that they are given the opportunity to MAKE with these materials and they shine.

In the MakerSpace we encourage the 5 C's: skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking, citizenship and creativity.

These skills are made possible because our MakerSpace encourages STEAM activities through making, tinkering, playing, creating and trying. While students are using the simple paper blocks in the Minecraft sets to create stop-motion videos, they are also building these vital skills. While learning to code at the basic level using the OSMO coding kit or the more advanced level using the Ozobot, each student will walk away with more than just future foundations of computer skills. The Q-Ba-Maze will allow students to work together to build not just marble mazes but all of the 5 C skills we want to encourage. We want so much for our students and we appreciate any help you can provide to give them a chance to see opportunities and gain valuable skills.
