This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 2nd-grade students are the most amazing and resilient young people. We are a community of diverse learners that come from families dealing with low-income, high poverty, and homelessness. Many students have only been in the country for a few years, and several are refugees speaking limited English. Despite the challenges we face every day, we have co-created a classroom that is a sanctuary for eager minds. We believe that diversity is our strength.

My students bring a rich tapestry of heritage and personal experience.

For many of my students, their basic needs are met through school: breakfast, free/reduced-price lunch, access to literature and technology, social and emotional health, a friendly smile, and people who care. Their families and community do their very best to provide a rich educational experience and promote a bright future for each student. My students have big dreams and bright minds but are lacking the resources to make those dreams a reality on their own.

My Project

21st century learners love technology! In our classroom, we are very fortunate to have eight iPads for the 20 learners. Each student has opportunities daily for lesson enrichment using our iPads. In our classroom, we have a tall table with bar stools and iPads. We call it our “Genius Bar.” Currently, students sit here and are using the iPads for math and reading practice individually in a very limited way. We want to get more out of our technology!

Students need to collaborate, create, thinking critically, and develop digital literacy.

Osmo’s Genius Kits will enhance our technology usage with collaborative hands-on learning that reinforces our grade-level standards and support those students who have gaps in their learning in a digitally fun way.

The Genius Kits have five learning games all of which involve movement and critical thinking: Tangram, Words, Newton, Masterpiece, and Numbers. Tangram provides exercises with spatial and visual problem-solving skills. Words provides phonics practice and word manipulation skills. This is an area our class needs a great deal of practice. Newton incorporates science and problem solving. Masterpiece reinforces fine motor skills and creativity. Numbers is designed to support fact fluency and subitizing while provided instant feedback for the student.

There is so much it can do for us! We would love to have this wonderful piece of technology in our classroom. In our classroom, we believe that each of us is a genius at something. Help us develop our talents and foster the genius’ of tomorrow.
