My Students

Students pour into the sound of welcoming good morning music; bopping their heads as they unpack anxiously, to learn and interact.

They grab their books, snuggle up with a pillow and lose themselves in adventure. That's only the beginning! We conclude our days with a "SNAP" classic,"I've Got the Power!" Our students have the POWER to reach for the stars. Our classroom (1-1) is filled with many friends of diverse backgrounds. Each and everyone of them are jewels, treasures dug up from the Earth. Excited, energetic, light hearted and bright are words that best describe these gems. Our students demonstrate to us daily that the cares of this world can be overcome with a smile and hard work. Our school is located in an urban environment of which poses a challenge for many of our families. A great deal of the students in 1-1 are Learning English as a second language. Others lack academic support at home and rely heavily on school resources provided to aid in their academic success.

My Project

The resources requested will enhance reading fluency, motivate the learner, boost listening comprehension and confidence, build vocabulary, and provide additional reading support and reinforcement. These materials will be used to augment and reinforce skills and strategies that are being discussed during whole group learning. This project provides an on going model for the students as they develop in grammatical syntax and build phonemic awareness. We plan to create an audio reading station with these resources. The books we've selected can be used in various ways. We seek to support our ESL students and challenge others to develop in reading fluency and build vocabulary. Our students will learn to answer comprehension questions, decode unknown words and extend their academic vocabulary. As students read they are able to hear and imitate the words heard, practicing and rereading books over and over until they are able to read the text independent of the audio support.

Your partnership with us will allow us to develop and challenge our students to build strong listening comprehension.

That same partnership will help our ESL students to become more successful in acquiring English as a second language. Hearing the words, visualizing the events and answering questions in small groups promote and encourage the learners to use English more and bring them the confidence they need to do so.
