Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
FIA is a 6-8 school in the Oakland Unified School District that serves two hundred and fifty students. The student body at FIA is predominantly African-American and Latino, with twenty-five percent of the student body speaking Spanish as their first language. Thirty-three percent of the students are English Learners and the campus includes a newcomers program for students primarily immigrating from Central American and Middle Eastern countries.
By providing an innovative and responsive learning environment, FIA students act as agents of change through accessing their power, building their confidence and speaking out against the many injustices that plague Oakland youth.
My Project
Right now, about eighty-five percent of the students at our school are testing multiple grades below grade level in literacy. Getting them excited about reading and keeping them excited is essential to their success. The good news is that since the beginning of the school year, our students have checked out nearly 4,500 books. That is an astounding number, especially when you consider that our student body is only about two hundred and fifty students.
Our students have shown us that they are hungry for books.
If we give them the books that they want, they will read them.
If they keep reading, they will become life-long readers and scholars. I want to give them the freedom to read the books they're asking for!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
