My Students

My students consists of thirty students of which seventeen are English Language Learners. These students need to have access to information on the Internet during Universal Access time. They can access Khan Academy, IXL and Accelerated Reader.

My students are wonderful and are very curious about the world around them.

Sometimes I feel that some of my students fall behind in lessons, especially math, because they have not had enough exposure to the academic language. Additionally, if they do fall behind, it is hard for me to catch all of them up since there are thirty students in the class. I would like my students to be able to work by themselves or in small groups when they are struggling with language that keeps them from accessing the curriculum.

My Project

My students will work by themselves or in small groups to access lessons at the Khan Academy. When a student or students are not comprehending a lesson, often times, all that is needed is for the instructor to slow down or to present the material differently. However, this can cause the other students to become bored. With a new computer, the students will have a chance to see a reteach of a lesson in a safe environment that has a limited risk to them. They can pause or rewind the lesson as often as they want without the fear of anyone knowing they have yet to master that particular standard or lesson.

My project will make a difference because I have seen it work in the past.

Children don't want the other kids in the class to know when they have not mastered a particular standard. When the students are able to work by themselves or with partners that are at their level, they will take risks to uncover the content. In the past, I had access to a updated computer and it was incredible to watch the students take responsibility for their own learning.
