My Students
At my school, almost 70% of the kids live in poverty. I work with some who have faced extremely difficult situations and others who just need a boost to get through the day. Yet in spite of it all, they are some of the most resilient and enthusiastic kids I have ever met, and they deserve the best!
Due to the difficult life situations some of my students are forced to cope with, or learning, physical, or emotional disabilities, many of my students lack the social and problem-solving skills they will need to live healthy, productive lives as adults.
As the school social worker, many of my kids have a difficult time participating in conventional school activities such as paying attention, following directions, and performing pencil/paper tasks. Since they have a hard time learning the way many other students do, activities have to be very interactive and meet their sensory needs in order for them to really learn. By using games and activities, students with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, emotional & behavior disorders, or other challenges can learn how to regulate their emotions, solve problems, and develop appropriate relationships with others.
My Project
Some of my students have a difficult time sitting in chairs for long periods of time. They need room to move and fidget in order to stay focused. I hope to use a couple therapy balls instead of chairs and give them sensory toys to help keep their hands busy! In addition, I often have students get up and move around my room during various activities. Spot markers would make these activities much easier since they are more visible than the usual boring masking tape we have to use! Lastly, one of my students' favorite activities is Jeopardy. However, they always ask for dry erase boards instead of paper when they want to write an answer. Unfortunately, I don't have any like their classroom teachers do, so I promised several students that I would try to get some this year! All these supplies will help me to better serve my 2nd-6th grade students, while allowing them to have fun as they learn.
Within my classroom, I strive to create an environment that demonstrates to all my students that their differences and challenges are accepted.
I love watching their faces light up when they realize that they ARE able to succeed in the classroom. These students are our future and I am committed to helping them learn the skills they will need to succeed and realize their own potential to change the world around them.
