My Students

The beauty of student creation becomes even more evident when you understand the story, challenges, and emotions behind each masterpiece. Located in a low socioeconomic community, many of my students face challenges at home, are forced to grow up too quickly, and do not have the opportunity to explore the world outside. Because of a lack of experiences and opportunity, students struggle to make meaningful connections in their learning.

My goal is to give my student artists these enriching experiences inside of the classroom and re-engage at-risk students in their education.

Rather than fighting or disrupting a lesson, students are encouraged to express and self-regulate emotions through art. Many struggling students arrive at the art room door looking for an outlet and a place to belong. Once students understand that they can take their emotions, good and bad, and channel them into creativity, the opportunities are endless. There is no greater reward than building a relationship with a child that furthers them not only in the art room; but in life.

My Project

Students need paint to complete heart paintings inspired by Peter Max and Romero Britto. We currently have a limited selection of paints available and this will allow the students to discover and use brighter colors.

I want encourage my students to create a more colorful world for themselves.

The colorful construction paper will be used to create Matisse inspired collages where the students learn about geometric and organic shapes. Paints will also be used to create murals throughout the school and complete the set for the school play, Once On This Island.

These supplies are just the things we need to restock the art room and continue making beautiful work in 2018.
