My Students

My students walk into school eager to start each and every day. We start our days by spending fifteen minutes to gain focus, support students who need encouragement, and make sure we are all ready to learn from each other. Our school is K-5 and has a diverse group of students.

We have endured so much this past year, and so much has changed.

Kids have shown their resilience and learned to be flexible and to adapt. I would like to create a classroom environment that encourages their new flexible nature.

Our class is full of bright minds with great ideas waiting to be shared with the world.

My Project

Having a class pet has many benefits, including helping with anxiety, stress reduction, self-esteem and empathy. I have experienced students getting in tune with their creative side. Their ability to imagine things and think outside the box with just looking over at the class pet. My students love to read to our leopard Gecko; some even share their exciting news with her as if she’s their old friend. I always want my students to feel safe, loved, and welcome in our room and it is so refreshing to see them bestow those values towards our gecko. We got her when she was a baby and she is quickly outgrowing her terrarium. My class has been quick to point this out and want to take care of her by giving her a larger home. When I first got our gecko, I wanted to create a safe place for her to be able to feel comfortable, while teaching my students how to take care of her and others as well as responsibility. It has been such a treat watching them develop such empathy and growth with our classroom addition.
