Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Ms. G, your Garden Club kids are really dedicated, huh? " This is a common phrase I hear teachers and staff at my school use to describe my Garden Club students.

My students are change-makers.

Everyday, my 31 driven, motivated, and determined high school students plan out how we are going to make change in our community through our school garden. I'm consider myself lucky to advise my students, who span from 9th to 12th grade, in their efforts to create a space of health and resiliency in our community.

My students give up their weekends and some even give up their summers to make sure our garden is maintained and cared for at all times. Their dedication is truly astounding and inspires me every day in and out of the classroom. For them, the garden is a place of hope, beauty, resistance, strength, and tranquility.

My Project

We need gardening tools - including barrier fabric, hoes, pruning shears, a trellis and trowels and raised beds to help our school community garden grow! By having the necessary gardening tools and supplies, my students can expand our school community garden.

My students dream of having a school Farmer's Market.

A place where they can sell or donate freshly grown, organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs at a much lower cost to students and families in need. Our school is located in a food desert and most families struggle to find local fresh products to use in meals for our students. By expanding our garden, we would have the capacity to grow more produce and have a bigger harvest so that we can donate to families or start our first ever farmer's market.
