My Students

P.S. 194K students come from a wide range of backgrounds and developmental needs. We are a Title 1 school and nearly all of our students qualify for free meals. Many of our students have recently emigrated to the United States and some are living in temporary housing.

Our children are valued and we work really hard to nurture their minds so they continue to grow despite the economic challenges their families may face.

There are limited extra curricular activities after school hours in the community. Many students rely on our school to expose them to the arts, sports, music, or technology.

My Project

My school needs yoga mats and supplies to create a calming atmosphere while we practice Yoga and Mindfulness. Many students are experiencing anxiety at earlier ages due to home life or challenges at school. I would like to provide an opportunity for students to practice and learn strategies to cope with stress. Our program will teach students basic yoga poses, mindful based stress reduction techniques and how to breathe properly when under pressure. We need mats so our students are not practicing on cold tile floors.

Yoga increases mental concentration, improves self-esteem, and increases energy levels to optimize any learning experience.

Our students' overall quality of life will improve by simply introducing a time for them to practice maintaining a pose on a comfortable and clean mat. It is important that we have proper cleaning materials so our mats can be used for different groups and for many years. We also need a diffuser and essential oils to create an environment where students have better mental clarity and are calm while learning. Essential Oils are a safe and natural way to enhance the experience without using chemical filled air fresheners. Our Yoga program needs these materials to get started so we can help our students form healthy habits which will have a life long positive impact.
