My Project

In the 2023-24 school year, our school district opened a new state-of-the-art Pre-K - 12 school building. In the "Innovation Center" area of the new facility is a STEAM classroom; and in the fall of 2024, a STEAM teacher was employed, and students in grades 4 - 8 began instruction. In addition to STEAM instruction and projects, classroom teachers team up with the STEAM teacher to offer major challenging hands-on projects at each grade level in the science classrooms.

Fifth-grade students will create cordless leaf-blower hovercrafts in both the science and STEAM rooms.

They will use hand and cordless tools to measure, saw, drill, attach with screws, paint, and staple all parts required to create a hovercraft.

Upon completion of the project, students will be able to turn on the leaf blower switch and ride it in the hallways. Multiple hovercrafts will be created in each classroom, with an interchangeable air passageway, to allow the leaf blower to be reinserted into each hovercraft. The hovercraft idea is another exciting and challenging STEAM project being developed and included in our fifth-grade curriculum for years to come.

The goal of securing a DonorsChoose grant for leaf blowers, batteries, and a charger does not end with the hovercraft project. The batteries can be used with compatible cordless drills, sanders, and jigsaws. The leaf blowers will be used in additional grade 5-8 projects including a wind turbine project, the sailboat project, and an aerodynamic wind tunnel build. Add in the instructional units for drones, robotics, 3-D printers, coding, CNC routers, engravers, a variety of materials for builds, and high school classes, and the possibilities are unlimited!
