My Students

Many of the students at my school are at once wonderful and troubled; curious and mistrusting; giving and needy; and worldly and sheltered. The circumstance of their young lives often prevents them from fully achieving academic success. The availability of opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond basic curriculum is many times stunted. It is through resources such as DonorsChoose, that teachers such as myself are able to support students to gain more than an "ordinary" education.

Children thrive high interest, hands-on engaging activities, and acquiring the materials requested bolsters the passion to learn.

Oftentimes, despite our best efforts as educators, students are impacted by environmental issues over which we have no control.

My Project

Though our school is nestled in a rough urban neighborhood, nature abounds! We have robins, crows, hummingbirds, sparrows, and other wild birds that amaze the kids! Learning to care for the birds- which in this project will include food and shelter - is an invaluable lesson.

This experience will be magnified when students are able to construct their own birdhouses to hang near their homes, or near their classrooms.

The supplies allow students to view birds, identify birds, take pictures instantly, gauge the flight patterns of the birds using compasses, and create a bird-watching book and bird story book, complete with their own photographs! While the students will be fledgling birdwatchers, they will gain appreciation of their feathered friends.

All of these activities will be conducted after school! I hold a space for after-school clubs, and my Book Club has ended for the school year. Birdwatching is not a traditional hobby for urban youngsters- so introducing the students to this activity in our Birdwatcher's Club will be super fun! The final piece- the creation of our own Bird Books - with photos and illustrations, will enhance the science education, environmental education, transmit values on respect to nature and the fragility of ecosystems, and perhaps even spark a career for future "birders!"
