Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 20 kindergarten students have a deep love for learning. One of their favorite parts of the day is when I read a story to them. For this project, I have requested classic universal stories that are important across cultures but are unfamiliar to a majority of my students.

Our Title I community school has a high mobility rate, where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch.

We have so many different cultures and languages at our school, because my students live in the International District. We have resources for our families that can help to provide basic needs, such as food and clothing. Parents are also able to receive free classes to get their GED or to learn how to speak English.

My Project

"Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten" (G.K. Chesterton). My kindergarten students need to be taught to believe and hope for something great. They need to see that despite the obstacles, they can do anything that they set their minds to. As a continuation of my cultural exploration unit, my students will be able to make connections between traditional stories and the cultures we have studied. My kindergarten students will compare different versions of each classic fairy tale. They will know that every culture and person is able to overcome obstacles. After we talk about the books, my students will create their own version of one of the fairy tales. The students will work through the writing process to make their stories complete.

The requested fairy tales will inspire my students to believe in themselves.

They will read about the hardships one must overcome in order to reach the life they want. My students will be able to begin learning the writing process, and will see themselves become authors and illustrators.
