My Students

One thing I am 100% sure of in the world of education is that my students instantly become engaged when a hands-on aspect of a lesson is provided. Always! They also seem to perk up when they get an opportunity to explore their world themselves. Every single time! They NEED to be involved to learn.

Science is my favorite subject to teach!

It's an easy choice even though I personally love to read novels (you'd think I'd choose reading or literature as my favorite). However, the reaction I get from my students when teaching science makes choosing my favorite subject to teach an easy one. My kids just ooze excitement when something cool happens...for instance when one of our monarch caterpillars turned into its chrysalis before our eyes a few weeks ago, they were simply amazed. They really got fired up when we created "Moon Landers" for our egg-astronauts that were launched from the roof of our school! Yes, science is fun, but it's often a challenge to get those much-needed resources to actually MAKE it fun. Making lessons fun and engaging doesn't just happen...it takes resources, time, and effort. I'll take care of providing the time and effort, but I really need your help with a few resources.

My Project

My fourth graders are asking to learn more about creatures in our environment--more specifically, bugs! They really enjoyed our Monarch project, and are wanting to experience the life cycles of other insects. Of course, we have seen pictures in books, but experiencing the changes from day-to-day cannot be compared to pictures! It was beneficial for my students to see if/why some caterpillars fared better than others. Could pesticides make a difference in the health of the butterfly? We learned so much...and now want to know more about Hornworms, Praying Mantises, Lady Bugs, Beetles, and Painted Lady Butterflies. Next I want to help my students understand how stream erosion and deposition of soil occurs. This is actually related to one of our 4th grade state standards. Unfortunately, students really need models to understand the concept. The two stream tables will illustrate the processes of stream formation and the investigation of water as an element in environmental studies.

Several parents and administrators have told me that I'm a great teacher...however, I really can't take ALL of the credit. I'm indebted to donors that provided me with the resources to make learning fun. Otherwise, I'd be teaching exclusively from textbooks like many teachers. I'm blessed with a great class, the drive to work hard for them, and last (but not least) you! Thanks for helping me make a difference in my classroom!
