Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working at our school in Brooklyn is a dream, and it's all because of our students. While we are a Title I school, we're one of a handful of schools in NYC that only admits recent immigrants and refugees.

Our students come from over 30 countries and speak over 35 languages.

This years seniors come from Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Mexico, The Philippines, Senegal, Yemen, and more.

Project-based learning, student choice at every turn, and collaboration among both students and staff are what makes our school run so well.

I have seniors, and I absolutely LOVE sharing time and learning from them in their final year of high school before heading off into the world.

My Project

Before the school year began, I moved into a new classroom that needed a lot of work. With the generous help of Donors Choose, family, friends, and YOU, I was able to create an incredible space that I LOVE being in every day. The students also seem to be feeling it, but it's incomplete...

On the first day of school, along with introductions, I asked students what they would include in their dream classroom.

The goal was for them to help complete the room, and they came up with an incredible list. True to our students, many requested things that are not material objects, such as peace, pronoun recognition, a fun and supportive environment, respect, equality, etc. But when pressed and offered examples (more comfortable seating, snacks, and so forth), they came up with a thoughtful list.

The amazing staff at our school have donated what they can from their rooms and homes, and this project is some of what is left on our list. It is mostly things to help them get through the day - stress balls, games, snacks, water bottles, tea, and so forth. We really appreciate your support in helping to make their last year of high school an extra special one!
