Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

An ELA classroom in a public school in Harlem, NYC, our student population comprises hard-working, linguistically diverse learners. Our students come from all corners of the city, and we welcome newly migrated learners from all corners of the globe into our learning and social community with open arms. This project aims to support students in knowing they have their little cozy corner of New York City to engage with multiple forms of literature in ways that feel challenging yet accessible and enjoyable.

The reading, writing, and art nook, eventually furnished with welcoming, flexible seating, a robust collection of traditional and graphic literature in English, Spanish, and French, and supplies to experiment with creative writing and visual art, will support students in identifying their unique interpretive and expressive strengths, building their confidence in approaching literature in an English Language Arts classroom -- and ultimately well beyond it!

Students will be able to settle into the nook during independent reading time and after school office hours when they need a quiet reprieve from stressful moments, and it will provide a more warm and welcoming setting in which to meet with those in need of a little extra support 1:1 and small groups.
