Our Cool Down Room: Managing Volatile Emotions, Improving Coping Skills

My students need a soothing environment in which they can work on improving coping skills and managing intense emotions. Alternatives to standard fluorescent lighting are very important, as well as comfortable rugs and pillows.

My Students

HES is located in an urban part of Chattanooga, TN. My students are deeply committed to family ties and have a rapidly developing sense of social justice. The tenacity and determination to learn I see in my students transcends their socioeconomic station.

School should be a place where it is safe to express yourself, try new things, have big ideas, and be yourself.

A cool down room is a project that we've been envisioning for the school for the times when students have been carrying their pain and anger for too long and need a place to set their burden down, if only for a short time.

My Project

The cool down room for Hardy Elementary School will be a place where students focus on learning how to cope with severe emotional outbursts, whether those stem from anger, fear, jealousy, sadness, or other life events. With vast input from our school counselor, Mrs. Phillips, I've compiled items that we feel would benefit our students in working through these issues.

Managing difficult emotions and healing takes time, but environment is also important.

Removing students from hostile situations helps keep them and others around them safe. During the time that students spend in the cool down room, they will be working with an adult to sort out their initial situation through a variety of manipulatives such as puppets and Legos, coping with anger using stress balls and a child-appropriate punching bag. Music can be played from the portable CD at an appropriate volume for the child's mood, and could be uplifting or soothing.

The idea behind the cool down room is to provide an area where students who carry burdens far beyond their years can let go of some of the stress and bravado that they are wearing, even if only for a short period, and work on coping skills that will help them as they grow and mature.
