My Students

My students have been working hard to develop fluency and a love for reading. In the classroom I have 18 wonderful First Grader's learning foundations of reading and trying to develop a lover for the written word. My classroom is made up of many different cultures and ability levels.

My Project

As a thirteenth year teacher, time spent completing a professional development plan usually results in a “checked” box; hours spent reading and reviewing reiterations of the same concepts and approaches to incorporating reading into the classroom. Guidance from these courses have filled my classroom with cute and colorful books about academics that are often similar to books that you could find in every classroom in my school. While books are functionally sound, they were not inspiring a joy or excitement in my students. Recently, I began to understand why.

“Classrooms that are inclusive and reflect diversities of the students in your room will help all students feel comfortable and empowered” those words from Jennifer Serravallo’s A Teacher’s Guide to Reading struck me.

I looked to the current library that filled my shelves and did not see all my students reflected in the stories there. A light bulb of understanding went off in my brain that no matter how hard I work to develop a love and motivation for reading, it will always fall short until true inclusivity is reflected in my classroom library.

To achieve this, I will be creating multiple classroom libraries that reflect diversity and inclusivity. I have been reflecting, researching, and following storytellers that are committed to helping teachers ensure diversity in races, genders, abilities, and all aspects of humans that make us uniquely wonderful and ourselves. My goal is ensure that my entire student body feels represented in the stories they are hearing, empowered by this representation, and learn empathy and compassion by hearing the stories of others.
