My Project

These cushions, the bookshelf and the rug will provide a library space that allows my students an open and alternative seating area to read. Allowing students time, each day, to have the freedom to explore books of their choice, sparks their interest in various genres, creates an opportunity to acquire more vocabulary, and lays the foundation of loving to read.

The goal of this project is to provide a space that ignites the love of reading, while creating an area that makes students want to stay engaged.

By eliminating chairs and desks, in this space, students have an opportunity to decompress and focus on the window to the world books offer them.

Alternative seating in the classroom is beneficial in a variety of ways: (1) Choice - Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice. (2) Comfort - An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student. (3) Community - Flexible seating encourages students to share, encourages them to take turns in different locations, and with different seating options. (4) Commitment to Learning - By making the room 'ours' instead of 'mine,' the students have a sense of ownership that will make them more invested in their own education.
