I've only been teaching sixth grade for two years and I don't have the number or breadth of books that our readers need. Our students learn at an extraordinary school where they don't read textbooks; they read novels. Our group of urban students are working hard to build upon a rich foundation of literature. I have to meet their independent reading needs each and every day. To be an effective reading teacher, I need to be able to direct students toward novels that they will love. I'm asking you to help build our classroom library. I've scoured and searched to find graphic novels about American teenage years and middle eastern history, contemporary urban fantasy novels, books directed just for boys, and gossip books girls won't put down. Mysteries with a sports theme embedded within and female heroines who live in a scientific future are critical books for our classroom. Please enable our students to always have the genres they're looking forward to reading or wish to explore at their fingertips. Literate learners are the most important kind to cultivate.
