Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning I greet my students and tell them, "I am happy to see you," because I am. We have built a wonderful learning environment together. It would be wonderful to give the students basic school supplies so they can put their best foot forward everyday of first grade.

My students are English Language Learners.

They represent many different countries like Mexico, Bangladesh, Yemen, Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. Despite their different cultures and home language, we are one world in our classroom. Our desire for learning unites us. Despite their economically disadvantaged background, they are curious and eager learners.

My Project

My students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Their parents speak little to no English. Therefore, job opportunities are limited. In September, many students around the nation embark on the often joyful process of getting ready for school by buying school supplies. However, sometimes it is not easy for the parents to buy the basic school supplies their children need right away. Some families struggle to maintain the supplies they need throughout the year. It is my hope that my students will be able to put their best foot forward on every day of first grade. Pencils are needed to write notes, stories and informational text. Notebooks would keep their ideas organized in one place. Folders and pencil boxes would further help with organization. Erasres help as they refine their ideas during the revision process. Crayons and scissors would help them create artwork for their writing. Imagination and determination would be all they would need if they had these supplies.

Basic resources in a classroom is paramount to learning.

Take, for example, our writing process. We plan jotting down our ideas with our pencils create a web of ideas. We thoughtfully use those ideas to write a draft and then revise and edit using pencils and notebooks. Finally, we publish our work and save it in a folder to create a portfolio of our work throughout the year. Imagine being able to do all that without worrying where to get your basic supplies. Imagination would be the only limits
