This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Same old Stories! My students have read most of the books that I have access to class sets. We are supposed to combine science based texts with our reading skills this semester. We thought it would be great to study mountains, weather, and physical challenges. This series is perfect.

My students are living and going to school in an environment that is challenged with gang violence, poverty and hopelessness.

They have learning challenges so finding material that they can read and still find interesting is difficult. My students struggle everyday with their academics, anger management and ability to cope under pressure. They have very little exposure to the world outside of the neighborhood. Their school is overcrowded and there is not enough money to get a whole new set of books that no one else is reading.

My Project

I want to expose them to new ways of problem solving and the opportunity to be exposed to stories about something other than urban drama. These books highlight the tale of kids their age going on an expedition to climb Mt. Everest. I think it would be valuable for them to combine science lessons on weather, mountains, effects of climate on human life, geology and stress with an exciting story. I have bought some copies of the first book but cannot afford enough for the whole class. Hopefully I can get enough of all three and we can take off!

Please, this is important because this might be the last chance to turn these kids onto reading.

They are in high school, struggling and falling behind and very few of them have encouragement to be better readers in their lives.
