This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love coming to art class! We follow the Teaching Artistic Behavior model of art education, which teaches students to think like an artist. Students must be creative, learn to problem solve, be able to communicate ideas, communicate with peers and more.

Each class is unique and special; our learning is entirely student-led.

Students' ideas and inspiration are always at the center of our classroom. Students, like artists, have their own ideas of what is important, what they are interested in, and what they want to share with the world. In our classroom, they are given a space to do all of those things! You won't see the same project twice!

We are a Title I school in Southwest Houston, TX with over 950 artists in residence students!

My Project

The aquarium supplies I have chosen will be used to create a calm space in our classroom. In my decade as an educator I have noticed that almost all students benefit from the calming and restorative benefits of aquariums in the classroom.

Our Artistic Aquarium will be a muse for young artists as well as an opportunity to practice caring for other living beings.

Adding a "classroom pet" in the form of an aquarium is an exciting way to share the joy of caring for living things, the calm and centered feeling many get when observing the aquarium and the reminder that as artists our inspiration can come from any number of places.

Our aquarium will feature fish that I have bred in my personal home aquarium as well as ghost shrimp, live aquatic plants and tropical plants growing in the water column. Students will have a chance to watch a variety of plants and animals growing - at different rates - a reminder for them as they grow also.
