Our African & Indigenous Histories Unfold While Creativity Thrives
Help me give my students things like feathers, bedazzlers, paints, face molds, gems, face masks, crayons, reference books, and glue sticks to keep it all together while making masks.

My Students
I teach at a Title One school. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new everyday, even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. All of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectually and professionally.
My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.
Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources, and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.
My Project
After a tumultuous year and a half, I finally have ten kiddos sitting in a room every day at 8:30 for our Global History II class. We have moved through the curriculum slowly, but move we have. We are now coming upon two areas of historical and cultural significance, the Ancient Kingdoms of Africa and the Maya, Aztec, and the Inca.
We have been working hard in our school to reframe the master-narratives that students have traditionally been taught that erase Black and Indigenous histories.
We are ending the school year ameliorating both erasures.
Students are reading the accompanying book, "The Children of Blood and Bone," and "The Black Panther." To add to this literary richness, the students, dealing with the emotional vestiges of the pandemic, will make masks with the support and guidance of the art teacher, Ms. Yonks.
I asked the students what supplies they would want to make masks after they have finished African Kingdoms and the Maya, Aztec, and Inca units. They asked for paint, crayons, feathers, gems, bedazzles, face molds, glue guns, and in a nod to the pandemic, they would like to decorate actual masks. These art supplies and references will provide the freshman students with their third art project of the year and allow their creativity to flourish.
