Our 8th Graders Can't Wait To Isolate Their DNA

My students need two DNA necklace kits from Carolina Biological Supplies to allow every student in my 8th grade classes to use lysis solution to break open their cheek cells, and then use ethanol to help the DNA precipitate out.

Help Ms. A.

I teach a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science to a diverse population of high-need students.

This fall our students will be studying genetics and heredity. In order to emphasize the concept that DNA is found in all our cells, it would be great for students to have the opportunity to isolate their own DNA from their cheek cells.

The DNA Necklace Kit from Carolina will allow students to get hands on experience with the necessary protocols to isolate DNA. The lab helps to reinforce important concepts about cells and our bodies. Students will begin their study of genetics by learning all about the structure and function of the DNA molecule. This experiment will be a culminating event for students. Often times students struggle to make a connection between the content covered in class and their own bodies and lives. This lab allows students to obtain strands of their own DNA right from sloughed off cheek cells! It also challenges students to learn to follow a procedure exactly- because the protocol is very specific, if students shake the test tube at the wrong time, the DNA does not precipitate out.

This experience will help every student make a personal and hands on connection to the information that we are learning in class.
