This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I'm writing to you in the hopes that you will grant my wonderful 3rd grade colleagues and I the opportunity to teach our students two much neglected subject areas next year: phonics and cursive script. We teach in a magnificent school in a much under-resourced area, and the situation with funding non-core curricular areas is only going to deteriorate next year with the drastic budget cuts that will take effect in September. My colleagues and I strongly feel that handwriting, and even more importantly, phonics, are two subjects that have fallen by the wayside in recent years, much to the students' detriment. While math and literacy mastery are key to securing a student's future, clear presentation of their ideas will carry them even further in their endeavors. Flawless spelling and neat handwriting will be invaluable assets that we in the 3rd grade feel we must address now, and with great force. However, we feel semi-helpless because there is no money with which to purchase the necessary materials. Which is why I am reaching out to you in this brief letter. Should you choose to fund the purchase of 3 class sets of phonics and cursive workbooks, you would set 60 children up for success in a way that they would otherwise be denied. We work so hard to make sure they are working to their potential in the core subjects, and it would be terrific to have the materials to allow them the chance to polish and perfect their ancilliary skills with these books.
