Our 1972 Euphoniums are EW-phoniums

We need a new euphonium so the old ones can finally be at peace, relieved of their spit-smeared misery. We also need some valve oil and slide grease.

About My Students

Members of my 8B band completed this project. All of the 49 students in the class worked in groups to answer the questions and the final draft is a representation of all the groups. What excites me most about this project is the creativity and humor the students demonstrated in their responses.

The students developed the idea after our Winter Concert performance. Because both the 8A and 8B band classes combine for the concert, the there were not enough working euphoniums for all of the students in the section. A couple of the students were forced to play on instruments that had badly corroded valves as well as leaks. When I announced the opportunity to work on a student-led project, the euphonium section spoke up and their classmates listened. After being shown the deplorable condition of the older instruments, the class voted affirmatively that obtaining a new euphonium should be the class focus for this project.

Every day my students enter the band room and make beautiful music together. They learn scales, rudiments, complex rhythms and strive to improve their skills as instrumentalists. Most of my students won't major in music. Many will continue to play throughout their lives and it is my hope that all will have a lifelong love, appreciation and respect for music. Perhaps the most important lesson that students take from my class is that of teamwork. A band is not a group of soloists. They learn that a good band works together as a community. They learn that every instrument has its on unique voice and function and that all must balance with one another to create melody and harmony. This project helped pull our class closer as a team. Only 6 students in the eighth grade band play the euphonium, yet every student in the class has shown energy and passion for helping their classmates get better instruments.

In Their Own Words

Students in our band are playing on JURASSIC EUPHONIUMS, many of which are older than our parents. The instruments are dented, held together by duct tape, have leaky spit valves and cracks. Spit is going everywhere and we are trying not to drown in it. The euphonium is an important instrument because it usually plays the bass line in band. For the new generation of band students, we wish to obtain a new generation of euphoniums.

We will bring this project to life by spreading it to as many people as we can. We will try to get a diverse group of individuals to raise money for our cause. We can use posters, write letters and social media to promote this project. We can put this project on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to help raise awareness for our cause.

The new euphonium will leave a good impression for the next generation of band students and they will be motivated to strive towards success. It will greatly help out the euphonium section of our band and will solve the problem of having to hold instruments together with tape due to leaks and cracks. This project isn't only going to advance our band program, but will teach us valuable life skills. As students and as a community we can learn to work as a team to advance towards this goal.
