My Students

Do you remember how proud you were when you first learned how to write, cut out a project, or tie your own shoes? For my kids, these tasks can seem almost impossible. Occupational Therapy helps them build the skills they need to master these skills and more in order for them to succeed in school!

I work in a specialized public K-8 school for children with special needs in Brooklyn, NY.

Many of my students have Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, or other developmental delays that make learning in a typical classroom incredibly difficult. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and the extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.

My Project

School-based Occupational Therapy uses play and functional tasks in order to build skills such as writing, cutting, copying from a board, and getting dressed independently. My students will use these supplies to strengthen their fingers by going on a treasure hunt to find beads in resistive putty, practice forming letters on specialized paper when making crafts, and sharpening their visual and fine motor skill by creating shapes and castles out of kinetic sand. Using games helps motivate students during sessions while continuing to improve their skills.

Developing functional fine motor and visual motor skills are essential to academic success, as well as independence after schooling.

With the use of the materials from this project, I can facilitate building these skills with my students, giving them the tools that they need for their futures.
