OSMOtize My Pre- K Class For Distance Learning!

Help me give my students an OSMO to support engaged learning online! Our four- and five-year old students are eager to learn during this coronavirus crisis, but we need better technology with hands-on interactive games to support them.

My Students

I teach in a high-poverty, all-female and all-black public school/Head Start program. We use a project-based approach which lends itself very naturally to lots of hands-on activities, experiments and field experiences as the context for learning critical pre-literacy, pre-math and social-emotional skills.

My students are fiercely curious and active four-year old girls learning in a single-sex classroom environment.

Everyday is a joy with loads of learning and lots of laughter. Our school building is closed, but we are still teaching and learning. Thanks to technology, we get a chance to see each other at least twice a day!

This year, we are studying the natural environment (trees), the built environment (buildings), the interaction between people and the natural and built environment (reduce, reuse, recycle), culture and art (through a clothing study), and physics and coding (through a balls study). The novel Coronavirus epidemic is creating a challenge for preschoolers who are "ready to learn," as the children often say.

My Project

I chose a classroom set of OSMOs to support. We plan to use the OSMOs as projectors for individual, small and large-group online meetings, enabling children to share their own work without requiring much adult support. We will also encourage children to use the OSMO as a tool for learning literacy and math, as follows:

The OSMO has literacy and math games that are a hybrid of a real-world and a virtual experience.

As such, these games provide a developmentally appropriate learning experience. I have a curated list of high quality apps as well to support math, literacy, fine motor, social-emotional and cognitive skills.

The Coronavirus caught most of us by surprise. While we have access to the iPads, our students need our online curriculum which calls for the tools made available through the use of an Osmo!
