This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach technology to students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The majority of my students are African American, and they come from varying economic backgrounds.
Our school, as a whole, is at about 47% poverty level so we, unfortunately, don't qualify for Title I funding and many other grants to purchase items for these deserving students.
My students, like most young students, enjoy activities that require movement, that are hands-on, and that allows students to work collaboratively during class. I am always trying to find items that will help improve their learning experiences and add excitement to the classroom environment.
My Project
In the computer lab, the students are working together to problem solve, innovate, and explore STEM topics.
The students in my classroom love technology that is hands on and the Osmo Genius Starter Kit and Coding Game incorporates hands-on learning with coding, which is a win-win.
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields are an ever-growing entity. By providing students with meaningful STEM experiences, I hope to prepare students for their future successes. It is essential that students maintain their curiosity and creativity while pairing it with their growing skills of practicality and problem-solving. I want to help students identify things that they cannot solve yet and then work through a way to bring a solution to fruition. It is essential that we provide them with these experiences at school.
To achieve their highest potential in this age of technology, my students need greater access to technology that will allow them to explore and create through hands-on experiences. An Osmo Genius Kit and coding game accessory will allow students to code and then have the device follow their commands. I feel that utilizing technology helps to foster academic growth, creativity, and excitement, and also helps students learn how to work together - which is essential for students.
