This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Next year will be my 20th year as a classroom teacher and, thanks to the incredible support of colleagues, administration, and students and families (and donors like you!), I still feel as fresh and hopeful about my work as the day I began. At scant moments when my resolve falters, within seconds a flood of images, sounds, and smiles spills forth to remind me of just how lucky I am to do this work.

This work--at moments both big and small--is all about meeting the kids the kids where they are, and helping them achieve their dreams.

Every child has dreams for the future, but far too many find their dreams curtailed by struggles with dyslexia or other language-based learning disabilities. The market is flooded with apps and schemes to help struggling readers, but few are rooted in sound practice and compound students' frustration. In all my years, I have only seen one truly transformative approach for reaching such students: Orton-Gillingham (OG). With your support, this summer I will complete a highly regarded, 10-day, 60-hour OG course so that, come September, I can hold after-school or before-school small group sessions with students in desperate need of targeted instruction. And while OG is designed for 1:1 or small groups, I plan to utilize key methods within the regular school day to maximize impact.
