My Project

Do you remember how activities you did in school which departed from the ordinary left lasting memories? The reason for that is that the novelty and energy of them enhanced connections in the brain. I teach a class on creativity and want to bring the art of origami into my students’ lives especially because it departs from ordinary lessons.

TAG is a magnet elementary school in the vibrant metropolis of New York.

Our students travel on trains and busses from all five boroughs and bring with them a diversity of language, culture, and socioeconomics which makes this place feel like a microcosm of the world, a place where divergent ideas become convergent, and where we all learn – staff and students alike – what can be accomplished with energy, engagement, and opinions.

Unfortunately, supplies like origami paper are rather costly, and while children can begin making squares of their own from copy paper and loose leaf, the imperfection of the experience conflicts with the precision necessary to enjoy the Japanese art.

My class will introduce 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders to basic origami techniques, produce a series of elementary designs, and offer opportunities to transcend the ordinary menagerie and use folding techniques to make unique, but informed creations. Students will also learn about the history of the art and enjoy a series of lessons on world-class examples of origami creations, both representational and non-representational abstract designs.

In a long day of pencils in hand, the children will delight in folding paper in a calm room with good materials.
