My Students

How does one make art with only paper? The answer is: origami. Origami is the art of paper folding. This year I am so excited because I have started a club to make origami jewelry.

The origami club will meet every week after school.

Students are from the fourth grade and they are all from a Title I school. The majority are English as a New Language (ENL) students. They come from different countries around the world and speak over a dozen languages and dialects. The origami club with expose the children to multicultural art and allow students to share their cultural experiences with each other.

My Project

Students will tackle a new origami project with different origami paper. Each week, the students in my origami jewelry club will experiment with new folds using different types and sizes of paper. As they become more efficient at creating folded art, they will create miniature version of their folded paper sculpture and attach them to the fish hook earrings and beads with tacky glue, as well as wires to create other jewelry. The pliers will be used to format and create different jewelry. As an added bonus, some of the jewelry they create will be sold to raise money for our school's give back to the community charity work to support cancer awareness and research. This charity work teaches the students that small efforts on their part can have a huge positive impact on their community, as well as the world. Through teamwork and perseverance, they can learn to master skills, develop ideas and make a difference in the world they live in.

By funding this project, you will be providing my students with a large variety of paper, tacky glue, wire, beads, and fish hook earrings that they will use to create origami sculpture and jewelry.

This weekly creative process will empower my students, allow them to express their artistic whimsy and show them that their small effort have a huge impact in a world that they live in.
