Organizing Our Thoughts

My Students

I will soon be teaching 7th grade English in a Brooklyn middle school. Since 95% of my students are living under the poverty line, they they do not come to school with basic school supplies, inhibiting them from developing the organizational skills that are a necessary component of success.

They also rarely have access to books, making it impossible to practice and improve their literacy skills, or foster a passion for reading.

I'm looking forward to a successful school year ending in my students having improved self-worth, enhanced reading and writing skills, and determination to beat the odds.

My Project

With these basic school supplies, my students will be prepared to complete all the tasks I have asked of them in an organized manner and gain skills that will carry them through their educational careers and beyond. In addition, helping us build a library will allow my students to explore different titles and genres of writing. I truly believe that a person who claims to not enjoy reading has just yet to find the right book. If I can help my students become avid readers, they may pursue reading their entire lives. A habit of consistent reading lowers stress, increases white brain matter, and believe it or not, expands knowledge.

My students see the affluence that exists elsewhere in the city and are constantly reminded of their poverty.

Having new school supplies will make my students feel as if they have support from others to determine their futures. Providing my students with access to books will help foster a love of literature that will hopefully follow them their entire lives.
