Organizing for Autism!

Help me give my students easy access to books, center activities, and manipulatives with carts and book bins. While teaching students with ASD to be independent, I would love for them to easily access materials daily.

My Students

I teach in a public school in Brooklyn. My kindergarten students are part of the NEST program, consisting of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder as well as general education students. They love coming to school and their love for learning is evident in everything they do! The NEST program gives students the opportunity to strive both academically and socially. They are encouraged to learn in ways that are best suited to their needs. As they are taught how to self regulate, their independence both in and out of the classroom is fostered and encouraged daily.

My Project

In teaching students with ASD, I have found that they struggle with organizational skills as well as the ability to independently retrieve materials they need. Having both books as well as manipulatives and center activities clearly labeled and accessible to them in mobile carts would be beneficial in fostering their independence. Also, having everything uniform is more conducive in a NEST environment as many different colors/mismatched furniture/bookshelves are distracting to my students on the spectrum.

The goal here is for my students on the spectrum to be able to self-regulate and independently access all they need to be successful on a daily basis.
