My Students

My students come from a low socioeconomic area and face adult like challenges on a daily basis. They come from all walks of life. They are performing on both ends of the learning spectrum in regards to school readiness. Many of my students have little to no parental involvement at home or outside of my classroom.

My students are little sponges that are full of life.

Every morning when they enter inside my classroom, they strive to learn and explore! What they love to do even more is go outside and explore the environment outside our classroom.

My Project

Learning occurs both inside and outside of the classroom as children learn and explore. After over 3 years of waiting for a playground, we were finally scheduled to break ground for a new playground this school year. However, Hurricane Irma has put a halt on that project. Major repairs to other schools and infrastructures have derailed that production.

Currently we don’t have a playground area or developmental equipment for our Kindergartens to engage in recess and/or any outdoor physical activities.

Usually we do indoor recess in a tight space, inside the classroom, using the smart board but my children always ask to go outside. When we do go outside, my students are just chasing each other in an open grassy area. The neighbor park is also under construction after the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Therefore, students after-school outlet to go and play has also been taken away.

We need sports equipment - footballs, soccer balls, jump ropes, kickball equipment, portable seating and more. This equipment will allow for us to engage in organized sport activities during recess and give my students the opportunity to get moving, active, and fit beyond the walls of our classroom.
