Help Ms. K.

From Disaster Zone to Organized Machine, my sixth graders are in desperate need of materials to organize learning.

I teach sixth grade to students in an extremely impoverished community on Chicago's west side. Students come to school consistently unprepared and therefore unable to achieve. Many students spend their first ten minutes of school begging fellow students for borrowed paper and a writing utensil. Remember yourself at 12? Its not a phase I'd like to return to. Its not always that parents are unable or unwilling to provide materials, but sixth graders are notoriously unorganized, clumsy, and a bit discombobulated. They also manage to lose everything! And all the while they are wasting precious time. This makes morning routines unnecessarily hard.

My solution is to provide students with uniform organization. All students in my sixth grade classroom will adopt the AVID organizational system which requires students to carry a three ring binder every day. The binders will be clear so that each student can decorate it and personalize their folder to show ownership and individualism. Inside the folder there is also a uniform organizational strategy. Each student will maintain a specifically arranged notebook which will promote student learning. First and foremost is the student planner which will monitor homework and serve as a communication strategy between families and myself. Students will all have dividers for individual subjects that will contain notes, assignments, and assessments. Post-its will further divide each section into ideas (beneath the Language Arts dividers are post-its for word study, vocabulary, notes, quizzes and tests). My students also need pencil pouches to keep their writing utensils in the same place at all times. Students will specifically be instructed on when and where items are to be filed. Random folder checks will be conducted to hold students accountable.

Students need to learn time management and organization. Both are necessary to overall achievement. These are skills that aren't learned automatically. They must be taught implicitly. What my students lack is both the knowledge and the materials to maintain systems of organization and management. Your assistance will ensure that students learn a system that works for both. They will also learn over the year how to best adapt the methods of organization and time management to their own personal learning styles.
