My Students

I work in a high poverty school and my students come from various backgrounds. School is the one place where these kids love to come because they will get two warm meals a day, they will be told how special they are, they will be loved by adults and most importantly, they will be held accountable.

School is the one place that is safe.

My students yearn to be in a place where their voice is heard, their stomachs are filled and where they feel valued and appreciated. It is my job to ensure that I fulfill all those needs while they are in my care. They are "my children" when they are in my classroom and I will do anything to ensure that they get the best experience possible. They are only "my children" for a year, but they stay in my heart forever.

My Project

Long gone are individual desks in the classroom. These have been replaced with rectangle shaped tables that students share with three other classmates. Although this promotes a strong sense of community, it also limits the storage space each student has.

Chair pockets give students the extra storage space they need to stay more organized, resulting in their success at school!

With a chair pocket on their back of their seat, students will have everything they need at their fingertips. Each student will have their own personal space to store notebooks, pencil boxes, books, etc. Less time will be wasted transitioning to get materials and more time will be spent on actual learning!

In an article on Parent Today, written on August 10, 2017, it included the following quote, “Being organized crosses all studies for education and then into all life situations. Directly teaching organizational skills [at home and in-school] aids students for their current task [school] while preparing them for their latter tasks [the workforce]". Not only does organization help students in their current learning situation, it also teaches and gives them a lifelong skill that will benefit them not only today, but in their future.
