My Students

The students I serve reside in a large inner city district. Although our middle school is located in a community where gentrification has been on the rise for approximately a decade. Although real estate prices have increased significantly, many of my students are not part of the new wave of residents that has moved into the area. 95% percent qualify for free or reduced lunch, and many of them live in one of many of the city's large housing projects. Some of my students have roots in the community that go as far back as the 30's and 40's. Many of the students I work with, I have worked with their older siblings, and I remember when they were toddlers accompanying their parent to open school night.

My students are warriors, critical thinkers, and advocates for themselves and others.

They come to school on a daily basis, despite their circumstances, ready to take on the challenges of the day. They are young, but some of them have endured a great deal. However, they do not allow themselves to be defined by their circumstances. They understand that it is their duty to always have respect for themselves, others, and their community.

My Project

A flexible space classroom is necessary for meeting the learning needs of my students. Sitting in rows are a thing of a past. My 21st century learners deserve an environment where they are allowed to move freely, and not be restricted by traditional classroom seating.

Providing a flexible learning space for my students will empower them to become their best selves.

The standing desks and the bouncy seats, will allow those students who need to move around more often than others, the freedom to do so without being a distraction to their peers. The write and wipe desks will give my students multiple options to show their work, and for those who like to doodle, they can do it without defacing school property! The comfy floor seats, will offer my students alternative option to sitting behind a desk. Sitting at a desk for hours becomes uncomfortable for some of my students.

As stated earlier, a flexible learning space will empower my students. Furthermore, it will increase engagement because students will be in a space where they are comfortable. It will encourage collaboration because students and furniture can move more fluidly throughout the classroom, making it easier for students to move into pairs and groups.

Creating this learning space for my students will allow students to become better collaborators, communicators, and critical thinkers, which are the 21st Century skills necessary for an ever- changing global community.
