My Students

"Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say." Imagine journeying through life without the means to communicate with the world around you. This is, unfortunately,​ the case for many of the students I am blessed to work with on a daily basis. I serve as a speech-language pathologist at a developmental preschool in a low-socioeconomic area located near Indianapolis, IN.

Every student I assist presents with a unique set of strengths and I feel it is my job to build off his or her strengths.

The students I am surrounded by daily have a variety of disabilities ranging from Down syndrome to severe cognitive disabilities, to all types of autism. While the students exhibit their own set of challenges, the joy they bring to me on a daily basis far outweighs any negatives. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to make even the slightest impact on the lives of each one of my students.

My Project

A group of 8 therapists, myself included, are being relocated from our current office space to allow for an additional preschool classroom to open up in our building. While this is very exciting new as it allows for more students to be reached educationally, we are left managing the time-consuming task of moving all our materials/belongings from one place to another. My goal is to use this required move as an opportunity to reorganize my materials so that I may spend less time lesson planning and searching for the items I need and spend more time servicing my students. My hopes are to utilize these storage containers for separating my materials into themes that I have found to be most engaging and motivating for students in the past.
