My Students

My fifteen first grade students live in a rural community in South Carolina. Our Title I school has 528 students, with 54% of the children qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Six boys and eight girls help to create an active and fun learning environment in our classroom.

I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Poverty may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students already have a "home." In other words, I know exactly where everything will go. We just need your help in getting everything through our door! The organizing cart will go at the end of the table near our door where students can have easy access to the materials inside. This cart will hold our math centers. These will help reinforce concepts students have previously learned in whole group. The cardstock will be used to print game boards and manipulatives for students to use in the centers. The laminating pouches will help these games last through multiple uses. The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency through authentic, meaningful activities that will further their understanding of the concepts.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our first grade classroom by building stronger number sense, which will aid in mastering our first grade standards.

This will change my students' lives for the better. They will love school and feel success at an early age --- having fun while learning!
